Research Focus

Welcome to the VIAM SOLUTIONS Lab at the University of Detroit Mercy, led by Dr. Pablo De Gracia. Our lab is devoted to advancing the frontiers of visual optics and ocular motor research, with a focus on improving our understanding of how the optics of the eye and eye movements contribute to visual perception and overall visual performance.

Our research focuses on:

The visual implications of the eye’s optical properties, the development and evaluation of multifocal contact lens designs for presbyopia and monovision, and the role of ocular movements in the onset and progression of refractive error

Recently, we have begun to use the CSO Osiris-T Aberrometer to aid in our research. The Osiris-T is a corneal topographer combined with a total ocular aberrometer able to measure the morphology and the corneal refractive component of the eyes, by means of the sagittal curvature, tangential curvature, elevation and power maps. With this instrument, we have been able to extract and visually map the collected data.

The Eyelink 1000 Plus is an eye tracker that uses a high speed camera to record binocular eye movements. This instrument is important for our research, as it allows us to track precise movements of the eye, pupil dilation, corneal reflection, and other information vital to our understanding of the visual system.

The NIMOevo is a metrology instrument that uses advanced wavefront measurement to deliver precise characterization of contact lenses, including multifocal, toric, Ortho-K, and scleral. This instrument allows us to collect precise measurements of contacts, and aids in assessments of optical quality.
